The Sophie/Tucker Love Story

Just like that, four months have gone by since Tucker came to live with me.

Four months.  Crazy how time just flies, does it?

It's already July.  In the blink of an eye, it'll be the holidays and we'll be shivering instead of schvitizing.

Yes I used the word SCHVITZ in a blog, I'm a jewish kid from Brooklyn, I'm entitled.

We don't sweat, we schvitz.

So how is Tucker doing?

To be honest?  Amazing.

I have never seen a cat take to home life so fast and so seamlessly in my nearly 2 decades of cat ownership.  He's so integrated into the family it's like he's been here 4 years instead of 4 months.

Needless to say, I share a TON of pics of the Tuck-Man (as Ashley likes to call him) on my personal Facebook.  Everyone seems to love seeing pics of Tucker, whether he's looking out the door or window, cuddling in my lap,  or having one of his daily "shit fits" that would make Tyler proud.

Yet, despite the love of Tucker pictures, I always get the same question:

What about Sophie?

How's Sophie getting along with Tucker?

Simply put, they're getting along FAMOUSLY.  No, they aren't cuddling yet, but every week they get closer together, and lately Tucker has preferred staying in the living room with her overnight instead of cuddling with us in bed.

For one thing, Sophie has the upper hand, and is the alpha cat.  Sure, she was the alpha with Jackson too, but Jackson was there first, and charged under the bed where she was hiding on her second day with me, thereby forever ruining their chances of ever being close friends.  She never got over that, and I know she actually did care for Jackson when he fell ill.

Tucker, to his credit, defers to her without being told.  He knows she's the boss and there's no question of that, and has no interest in trying to take over.  If Sophie wants to sit in the living room window, Tucker will stay out of the way.  If Sophie wants to sit by the front door first, he will sit a few cat-lengths away and let her watch the world first.

Yet, Tucker, being his very playful self, is desperately trying to get her to play with him.  Up to her face he'll run, gently trying to egg her on to run and chase, or run with her.

Has it worked?  Not quite yet.

Every time Tucker tries to get her to play and chase, Sophie looks at him with a "just what the fuck do you take me for?" look, but you can tell she's thinking about it more and more.

I find it utterly adorable.

The vibe I get with Tucker and Sophie is: love.

Tucker the love-sick, forlorn lover with a crush on a slightly older Sophie.  Sophie the veteran house-cat who has seen it all, done it all, and has the cat hair to prove it.

Sophie is as stubborn as female cats can be.  Tucker is as persistent as a cat in love can be.

I sense a long-term romance in the making.
